In the first half of 2017, Nokia grew apace in the digital health arena with the acquisition of the French chic wearable firm, Withings. This will allow Nokia to further integrate Withings products into its burgeoning digital health platform, and will give formerly Withings-branded products the scale to break into new markets
Withings has a legacy of beautiful products which work well – and which blend in with everyday life of the people who wear them. Compare this to some of the much more aesthetically heavy handed approaches of rival wearable makers, and it is clear that Withings has a design approach which is customer centred.
Combined with the power of a Nokia refocussed on the consumer market, with its innovation and scaling experience, this will prove a gripping case study on the role of large scale collaborations, and international partnerships.
We will also see how new products, such as heart rate monitors and scales, can be developed when there is wearables and privacy experience in house – and how this can work as part of a much larger beach-head into the patient-facing health arena.
Prepare to see the growth of a hardware firm into a healthcare powerhouse.
