DNA and genetic knowledge are going mainstream – and Helix is at the forefront of this field. With the backing of industry juggernaut Illumina, it is creating an ‘app store’ for understanding your own DNA – and enabling users to take concrete actions informed by it.
Helix is aiming to make genetic testing relevant to more than just the people interested in their lineage, or who have them done for specific medical purposes. Using a form of genetic sequencing which is more in-depth than others in the space, Helix will host the genetic information of its users – and allow other companies and apps to leverage the information on this platform. This can go from the very serious – for instance by offering you nutritional advice, offering new mothers advice on the their breast milk – to the more mundane, for instance by offering advice on wine or even just making a scarf of the image of your own genetic material.
This relative democratisation of genetic testing (the initial test costs relatively little) will open up hugely the amount of genetic data which is held, which should in turn allow much deeper understanding of the role which our DNA has on health, wellness – and responses to stimuli. With the stated goal of having around 80% of people sequenced in the next two decades, this may be a turning point in our understanding of what is possible given the right amount of data.
Prepare to see the democratisation of genetic testing.
